Though I recognize the attractiveness in all styles of furniture and decor, I'm really drawn to things distressed with burnished, antique, and even slightly rustic overtones. Rather than detracting from a piece's beauty, imperfections and flaws (both inherent and accidental) that have been "aged" actually enhance a piece's beauty by giving the appearance of perpetuity and thus say, "This item has stood the test of time. It has been around a while looking like this, and it will be around for a long time to come."

Old furniture and knick knacks are not unlike fine wine. Now, if only they could speak....
The furniture itself is relatively new, but the aged look comes from the reclaimed wood used to make it. The above piece spent most of its life as an old cedar fence before it became a hinged-top bench. You can see the sawmill's original sawblade marks on the 2x4 legs and insect bore holes in the top.

The next piece was built out of the same fence, complete with old nail holes and gate hinge "shadows," and is an essential part of my home's
entryway.

The good material from that first fence ran out right at the end of making the wall cabinet, so I had to wait awhile before the third project, a coatrack, could become a reality, which actually consists of three different fences. Another excellent find of reclaimed fence wood has provided material to start the next project, a unique display case for a family member, and perhaps enough for a shoe/boot shelf matching the three pieces shown here.
Now, elapse time over a year. Not only did a custom display cabinet and shoe/boot shelf get built, but there was just enough material to make a mail/key holder, a doorbell chime cover, and a picture frame as well.

Whereas the above projects were built before 2007 when I had no digital camera to show "during" pictures, the following projects' construction were well documented with digital pictures. Click on each picture below to see details.
