Like all pieces in my collection, this one's beauty is enhanced by its practicality. It unclutters our entryway and organizes our shoes and boots.
Here, you get a peek at the top's construction. Pocket hole screws hold it together, and the fencewood top basically caps the supporting plywood hidden underneath, enabling it to easily bear a person's weight.

You can see that there is indeed a back on this piece. The back is not merely decorative, for it serves two purposes: (1) To resist racking forces that could otherwise cause the shelf to collapse, and (2) to prevent shoe and boot tips from marring the wall.
